"I've seen this exact issue before on a number of iMacs and 27+ inch IPS displays, as recently as two weeks ago, it's almost always due to a vertical sync issue with the display. The vertical sync cable is separate from the video interface cable on the 27" models, and if not properly connected, will exhibit the vertical line problems described in this thread. That said, if this problem came out of nowhere, and you have warranty remaining, you should be able to get this taken care of by Apple as it is most definitely not normal behavior. If you don't have warranty, and aren't afraid to open one of these machines up, you can see where the vertical sync cable is in the ifixit manual for your particular model and try to reset it. A word of caution though, if you have a first generation 27" (Late 2009, I believe), be very careful if you do this yourself, the vertical sync cable is extremely fragile and very difficult to remove and reseat without damaging it."
